Each year, the Central Virginia Transportation Planning Organization prepares several documents which contribute to planning in the region. These documents are identified as plans, programs and studies.

Transportation Plans set forth goals, measures and objectives to improve and maintain the transportation network. Plans may explore potential funding sources that are available to help implement new projects. The CVTPO’s most comprehensive plan is the Long Range Transportation Plan, which sets goals for the Region’s transportation network over the next 20 years.

Transportation Studies typically identify issues within a specific area and provide several concepts for potential improvements. Studies can be limited to a small geography, as in the case of a corridor study, or a larger study, such as a locality-wide bicycle and pedestrian plan.

Transportation Programs are a means of allocating resources to specific planning initiatives. These programs are based off an annual budget. The two main programs the CVTPO manages are the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and a Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP).
